Known as "The Deity of 20th Century American Science Fiction" and "The Master of Adventure", after being medically discharged from the military due to heart issues in 1897 and drifting between jobs both in and out of his family, Edgar Rice Burroughs (ERB) turned his sights toward writing in 1911. Though he had never written a story, he recalled years later, looking back on that infamous year 1911 when he decided to try his hand at writing, that he always sat around his workplace (he worked as a pencil sharpener wholesaler at the time) plowing through garbage stories in pop magazines year after year, day after day, to kill time, when he finally decided that he could do just as good, if not better, at writing that same kind of "rot", as he called it. So, he penned his first story, Under the Moons of Mars, which was published the following year (1912), and a mega-hit 20th Century Sci-Fi/Adventure writer was instantly born.
